En una ceremonia marcada por un pésimo trabajo de animación de parte de Jimmy Fallon, los premios de la prensa extranjera de Hollywood alcanzaron su edición número 74 con muchas sorpresas en el apartado de televisión, y pocas en el de cine.
Tal y como habían predicho, La La Land, de Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) hizo pleno y rompió el récord de más Golden Globes en una noche, llevándose los 7 a los que competía, entre los que destacan Mejor película de comedia o musical, Mejor director y Mejor guion.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson hizo que se cayeran muchas quinielas, conquistando el premio a Mejor Actor de Reparto por su trabajo en Nocturnal Animals. En el resto de categorías, no hubo sorpresas. Casey Affleck ganó mejor actor en película de drama por su estupendo trabajo en Manchester by the Sea, mientras que Isabelle Huppert le aguó la fiesta a Natalie Portman y se llevó el premio a la mejor actriz del año en película de drama por su trabajo en Elle. En las categorías actorales de comedia o musicales, Ryan Gosling y Emma Stone triunfaron por sus papeles en La La Land. Moonlight, de Barry Jenkins, cumplió los pronósticos y se llevó el premio a Mejor película de drama, entre críticas por no haberse llevado ningún premio a actuación.
En el área televisiva, The Night Manager se llevó a casa 3 premios, seguida de The Crown, The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story y Atlanta que se hicieron con dos cada una.
